Your Google Business Profile is working harder than your website

For most local businesses, more people see the Google listing than the homepage. It is also the cheapest thing to fix this week.

Your Google Business Profile is working harder than your website

When somebody searches for a plumber, a restaurant or a dentist near them, the first thing they see is not a website. It is the map pack: three businesses with photos, hours, reviews and a call button.

Why the listing outranks the site

The listing answers the only questions a local customer has — are you open, are you close, are you any good, what is the number. Most people call straight from it and never load a website at all.

That means a beautiful site attached to a thin listing is a car with no wheels.

The five things worth an hour of your time

  • **Categories.** Your primary category decides which searches you appear in at all. Be specific: "taqueria" beats "restaurant".
  • **Hours, including holidays.** Wrong hours cost you the call and the trust.
  • **Photos, recent ones.** Listings with real photos of the work get noticeably more clicks than stock imagery.
  • **Reviews, and replies to them.** Replying matters as much as receiving; it shows the business is awake.
  • **Services and description.** Fill every field. Empty fields are ranking signals you are handing to a competitor.

Then connect it to the site

The listing and the website should agree on name, address, phone and hours, character for character. When they disagree, Google trusts neither. That consistency — plus a page on your site that actually talks about the town you serve — is most of local SEO for a small business.

The rest is patience.
